A classic Italian layered dessert made with sponge cake soaked in syrup and filled with smooth vanilla and chocolate custard for a rich yet balanced treat.
Ingredients
- 300 g sponge cake or ladyfingers
- 3 cups (720 ml) milk
- 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder or 100 g melted dark chocolate
- 1/2 cup fruit syrup or orange juice
- 1/4 cup water (optional)
Instructions
- Heat milk in a saucepan until warm but not boiling.
- Whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
- Slowly add warm milk to egg mixture while whisking.
- Return mixture to saucepan and cook, stirring, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Divide custard into two portions; mix cocoa or melted chocolate into one.
- Mix syrup or juice with water for soaking liquid.
- Dip sponge or ladyfingers lightly into liquid.
- Layer soaked sponge, vanilla custard, more sponge, and chocolate custard.
- Repeat layers, finishing with custard on top.
- Smooth surface and dust with cocoa powder.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.
