Description

Tender and flavorful Southern-style green beans simmered with onions, garlic, and smoky turkey in a rich savory broth.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 smoked turkey leg or 1 1/2 cups chopped smoked turkey
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Wash, trim, and snap green beans into smaller pieces.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  3. Sauté onion for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add smoked turkey and pour in chicken broth and water.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  7. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  8. Add green beans and stir to coat.
  9. Cover and simmer on low for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. Once tender, stir in butter.
  11. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
