Description

Southern fried cabbage is a quick and comforting skillet dish made with tender cabbage, sautéed onions, and smoky beef strips, creating a flavorful and budget-friendly side or light meal with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium green cabbage (about 1.2 kg), chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices smoked beef strips, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cabbage by chopping it into medium bite-sized pieces and slice the onion thinly.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the smoked beef strips until slightly crisp. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add olive oil to the same skillet and sauté the onions for 3–4 minutes until soft and translucent.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage and stir well to combine with the onions.
  5. Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender but still slightly firm.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  7. Add apple cider vinegar if using, and mix well.
  8. Return the smoked beef strips to the pan and cook for another 2 minutes.
  9. Serve warm as a side dish or light meal.

Notes

  • Do not overcook cabbage to maintain slight texture.
  • Garlic or chili flakes can be added for extra flavor.
  • Apple cider vinegar adds a mild tang and balances richness.
  • Can be served with rice, chicken, or potatoes.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
