Description

This Shenandoah Valley Basting Sauce is a tangy and savory vinegar-based barbecue sauce made with tomato juice, herbs, spices, and honey. Perfect for grilled chicken, turkey, and vegetables, this flavorful Southern-inspired sauce works beautifully as a basting sauce, marinade, or finishing glaze.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2/3 cup tomato juice
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 4 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic
  • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Add the apple cider vinegar, tomato juice, canola oil, honey, and fresh lemon juice to a blender.
  2. Add the poultry seasoning, kosher salt, black pepper, granulated garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  3. Blend for about 30 seconds until the sauce is smooth and emulsified.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired by adding more honey for sweetness or extra crushed red pepper for heat.
  5. Use immediately to baste grilled chicken, turkey, or vegetables while cooking.
  6. For best flavor, brush the sauce onto meat during the final 10 to 15 minutes of grilling to avoid burning.
  7. Store any remaining sauce in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Notes

  • Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Shake or stir well before each use because separation may occur naturally.
  • Warm gently over low heat if preferred before serving.
  • Add smoked paprika for a smoky barbecue flavor.
  • Increase the honey for a sweeter sauce.
  • Add cayenne pepper or extra red pepper flakes for more heat.
  • Dried thyme or rosemary can be added for extra herbal flavor.
  • Light olive oil may be substituted for canola oil.
  • The sauce can also be frozen for up to 2 months.
