Description
Mushy Peas are a classic British side dish made from tender green peas blended with butter, cream, scallions, and seasoning into a smooth, creamy mash that pairs perfectly with fish, meats, or roasted dishes.
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 6 medium scallions, thinly sliced
- 4 cups frozen green peas
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves (optional)
Instructions
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Add scallions and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add frozen peas and cook for 4–5 minutes until heated through.
- Stir in heavy cream, salt, and black pepper, and simmer for 2 minutes.
- Transfer mixture to a blender or food processor.
- Add lemon juice and blend until smooth but slightly textured.
- Return to saucepan and warm over low heat for 2–3 minutes.
- Stir in optional mint and adjust seasoning before serving.
Notes
- Do not over-blend if you prefer a chunkier texture.
- Add extra cream or milk if mixture is too thick.
- Mint adds a traditional fresh flavor but is optional.
- Frozen peas give a sweeter, brighter taste than canned peas.
- Best served warm immediately after preparation.
