Description

A smooth and creamy Italian limoncello custard with a bright citrus flavor, perfect for filling desserts or enjoying on its own.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1/4 cup limoncello liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk with lemon zest in a saucepan over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
  2. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks and sugar until pale and slightly thickened.
  3. Add cornstarch and whisk until smooth.
  4. Slowly pour warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan.
  6. Cook over medium heat, whisking continuously, until thickened (5–7 minutes).
  7. Remove from heat and stir in limoncello, vanilla extract, and butter until smooth.
  8. Transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap touching the surface.
  9. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until fully chilled.

Notes

  • Whisk constantly to prevent lumps.
  • Do not boil the milk to avoid curdling.
  • Press plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute limoncello with lemon juice and sugar syrup.
  • Whisk gently after chilling if the custard thickens too much.
