Description
A classic Hungarian sour cherry pie featuring a tender buttery crust and a sweet-tart cherry filling, perfect for a comforting homemade dessert.
Ingredients
- 250 g all-purpose flour
- 150 g sugar
- 125 g butter, cold and cubed
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 500 g pitted sour cherries
- 50–70 g sugar (for filling)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking pan.
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut in butter until crumbly.
- Add sugar, egg, and vanilla, then mix into a soft dough.
- Chill dough for 15–20 minutes.
- Divide dough, roll out two-thirds, and press into pan.
- Mix cherries with sugar and optional cornstarch, then spread over dough.
- Roll remaining dough and place on top (full cover or lattice).
- Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden.
- Cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use cornstarch for a thicker filling.
- Frozen cherries can be used if thawed and drained.
- Do not overwork dough to keep it tender.
- Add lemon zest or cinnamon for extra flavor.
- Serve with powdered sugar or ice cream.
