Description
A classic old-fashioned vinegar pie with a sweet and tangy custard-like filling, made from simple pantry ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F) and place pie crust in a 9-inch dish.
- Whisk sugar and flour together in a bowl.
- Add eggs and whisk until smooth.
- Slowly whisk in melted butter.
- Add vinegar, water, vanilla, and salt, mixing well.
- Pour filling into pie crust.
- Sprinkle nutmeg evenly over the top.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes until edges are set and center slightly jiggles.
- Cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
- Slice and serve chilled or at room temperature.
Notes
- Center should jiggle slightly when done.
- Chilling helps the filling set properly.
- Use apple cider vinegar for best flavor.
- Can add cinnamon instead of nutmeg.
- Serve with whipped cream if desired.
