Description

Crispy fried calamari and shrimp with a light, golden coating and tender seafood inside, perfect as a flavorful appetizer or main dish.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb calamari rings and tentacles
  • 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Optional: lemon wedges
  • Optional: marinara sauce or garlic aioli

Instructions

  1. Place calamari and shrimp in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Soak for 20–30 minutes.
  2. In another bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  3. Heat oil to 175°C (350°F) in a deep pan.
  4. Remove seafood from buttermilk and let excess drip off.
  5. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, coating evenly.
  6. Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden and crispy.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Sprinkle lightly with salt while hot.
  9. Serve immediately with lemon wedges and dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Do not overcrowd the pan to keep oil temperature stable.
  • Cornstarch ensures a lighter, crispier coating.
  • Serve immediately for best texture.
  • Reheat in oven or air fryer, not microwave.
  • Fully thaw and dry seafood before use.
