Description

This BBQ tofu is smoky, savory, and coated in a rich caramelized barbecue glaze with crispy edges and a tender center. It’s an easy plant-based recipe perfect for weeknight dinners, meal prep, sandwiches, wraps, or summer grilling.

Ingredients

  • 1 block (14 ounces) extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 20 to 30 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into slices, cubes, or rectangles.
  2. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) for baking, or preheat a grill to medium heat and lightly oil the grates.
  3. In a large bowl, combine olive oil, soy sauce, cornstarch, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
  4. Add the tofu and gently toss until evenly coated.
  5. For baking, arrange the tofu on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  6. For grilling, place tofu directly on the grill or onto skewers and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side until lightly charred.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, maple syrup, and apple cider vinegar.
  8. Brush the BBQ sauce over the tofu during the final few minutes of cooking and allow it to caramelize slightly.
  9. Serve warm with rice, roasted vegetables, salads, or inside sandwiches and wraps.

Notes

  • Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Use gluten-free soy sauce and barbecue sauce to keep the recipe gluten-free.
  • Thread tofu onto skewers with vegetables before grilling for easy serving.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Cooked tofu can be frozen for up to 2 months and reheated later.
