Description
This authentic French toast recipe features a golden crispy exterior with a soft, custardy center. Made with simple pantry ingredients, it is a comforting breakfast that pairs perfectly with maple syrup, berries, and powdered sugar.
Ingredients
- 4 slices day-old brioche or challah bread
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter for frying
- Powdered sugar for serving
- Maple syrup for topping
- Fresh berries for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until smooth.
- Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter.
- Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture for 10 to 15 seconds per side, allowing it to absorb without becoming soggy.
- Place the soaked bread slices into the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown and lightly crisp.
- Add the remaining butter as needed while cooking the remaining slices.
- Transfer the cooked French toast to serving plates.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries.
Notes
- Brioche, challah, and French bread work best for rich texture.
- Day-old bread absorbs the custard better without falling apart.
- Add nutmeg or cardamom for extra flavor.
- For a dairy-free version, use almond milk or oat milk.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Frozen French toast can be reheated in the oven or toaster for best texture.
