Description

A traditional Hungarian apple strudel made with flaky phyllo dough and a warmly spiced apple filling, offering a light, crisp, and comforting dessert.


Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup fine dry breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 sheets phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet and toast breadcrumbs until golden, then set aside.
  3. In a bowl, combine apples, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, vanilla, and raisins.
  4. Stir in toasted breadcrumbs to absorb moisture.
  5. Layer phyllo sheets one by one, brushing each with melted butter.
  6. Place apple filling along one edge, fold sides, and roll into a log.
  7. Transfer seam-side down to baking sheet and brush with remaining butter.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and crisp.
  9. Cool for 15 minutes, dust with powdered sugar, slice, and serve.
