Description

Tortilla burgers, also known as smash burger tacos, are a fun and flavorful twist on the classic burger. Juicy ground beef is pressed onto flour tortillas and pan-seared until crispy, then topped with cheese, fresh toppings, and creamy burger sauce for a delicious handheld meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20)
  • 6 small flour tortillas (about 6 inches)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar or American cheese
  • 1 tablespoon oil or butter for pan
  • Burger Sauce (optional):
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Toppings:
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup sliced pickles
  • 1/2 cup sliced onions (raw or lightly sautéed)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix all burger sauce ingredients until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. Divide into 6 equal portions.
  3. Press each portion of beef into a thin patty directly onto one side of a tortilla, covering most of the surface.
  4. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat with oil or butter. Place tortillas beef-side down and press gently with a spatula.
  5. Cook for 2–3 minutes until beef is browned and crusty. Flip so the tortilla side is down and sprinkle cheese on top of the beef.
  6. Cook another 1–2 minutes until cheese melts and tortilla is golden and crisp.
  7. Remove from skillet. Add burger sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions. Fold like a taco and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use a griddle or flat-top grill for cooking multiple tortilla burgers at once.
  • Whole wheat tortillas can be used for added fiber.
  • Customize toppings and sauce to your liking—spicy, smoky, or classic.
  • For best results, don’t overcrowd the pan.
  • Serve immediately for maximum crispiness.
