Description

Tender cabbage leaves stuffed with a savory beef and rice filling, simmered in a rich tomato sauce for a comforting and hearty meal. This classic dish is flavorful, satisfying, and perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 large green cabbage (about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the whole cabbage for 5–7 minutes until leaves soften. Cool and separate leaves.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, parsley, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place filling on each cabbage leaf, fold sides, and roll tightly.
  4. Mix tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  5. Arrange rolls seam-side down in a pot or baking dish and pour sauce over them.
  6. Cover and cook on low heat for 45–60 minutes until cabbage is tender and filling is cooked.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Add herbs or broth to enhance sauce flavor.
  • Replace part of the rice with vegetables for a lower-carb option.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months and thaw before reheating.
  • Reheat gently with extra sauce to keep moist.
