Description

A nostalgic, homey sandwich made with savory ground beef, bell peppers, and onions in a subtly sweet, tomato-based sauce—perfectly messy and always comforting.

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef

1/4 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon yellow mustard

3/4 cup ketchup

3 teaspoons brown sugar

Salt and ground black pepper, to taste

Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until fat renders, about 3–4 minutes.
  2. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper. Stir and cook until vegetables soften and beef is fully cooked, 3–5 more minutes.
  3. Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20–30 minutes until mixture thickens and flavors develop.
  5. Spoon meat mixture onto split hamburger buns. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Substitute turkey or venison for a leaner option.
  • Add Worcestershire or BBQ sauce for deeper flavor.
  • Use fresh garlic instead of powder for a richer taste.
  • Make it spicy with hot sauce or jalapeños.
  • Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.
