Description
A nostalgic, homey sandwich made with savory ground beef, bell peppers, and onions in a subtly sweet, tomato-based sauce—perfectly messy and always comforting.
Ingredients
1 pound lean ground beef
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
3/4 cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Hamburger buns, for serving
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until fat renders, about 3–4 minutes.
- Add chopped onion and green bell pepper. Stir and cook until vegetables soften and beef is fully cooked, 3–5 more minutes.
- Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20–30 minutes until mixture thickens and flavors develop.
- Spoon meat mixture onto split hamburger buns. Serve hot.
Notes
- Substitute turkey or venison for a leaner option.
- Add Worcestershire or BBQ sauce for deeper flavor.
- Use fresh garlic instead of powder for a richer taste.
- Make it spicy with hot sauce or jalapeños.
- Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.
