Description

A classic, creamy homemade custard made with milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla—perfect served warm, chilled, or layered into other desserts.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Place the milk, vanilla extract, and butter in a medium saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to gently simmer. Remove from heat before it reaches a boil.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and the sugar has dissolved.
  4. Return the saucepan to low heat. Slowly pour the egg mixture into the warm milk, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
  5. Continue cooking over low heat, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and serve warm, or transfer to a bowl, cover, and allow to cool before chilling.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for the richest, creamiest texture.
  • For a thicker custard, cook slightly longer or increase cornstarch slightly.
  • To avoid lumps, whisk constantly and don’t overheat.
