Description
A classic, creamy homemade custard made with milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla—perfect served warm, chilled, or layered into other desserts.
Ingredients
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Instructions
- Place the milk, vanilla extract, and butter in a medium saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to gently simmer. Remove from heat before it reaches a boil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and the sugar has dissolved.
- Return the saucepan to low heat. Slowly pour the egg mixture into the warm milk, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
- Continue cooking over low heat, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and serve warm, or transfer to a bowl, cover, and allow to cool before chilling.
Notes
- Use whole milk for the richest, creamiest texture.
- For a thicker custard, cook slightly longer or increase cornstarch slightly.
- To avoid lumps, whisk constantly and don’t overheat.
- Chill in individual cups for an easy make-ahead dessert.
- Add cinnamon or citrus zest for extra flavor variations.
