Description
A juicy and flavorful mushroom Swiss burger topped with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and melted Swiss cheese, served on toasted brioche buns.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for toasting the buns
- 2 large yellow onions, vertically sliced
- 1 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 4 thick slices Swiss cheese
- 4 brioche buns
- Mayonnaise, to taste
- Butter lettuce, as needed
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook for 8–10 minutes until softened.
- Reduce heat to medium, add ¼ teaspoon salt, and cook onions for 30–50 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
- While onions cook, divide ground beef into 4 patties. Slice mushrooms if needed.
- Transfer onions to a plate. In the same skillet, heat olive oil over medium. Add mushrooms and cook for about 10 minutes until browned. Season with ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper, then remove from pan.
- Increase heat to medium-high and cook burger patties, seasoning with remaining salt. Cook 3–4 minutes per side or until internal temp reaches 165°F. Add Swiss cheese during the last 2 minutes of cooking.
- Remove patties. Wipe skillet, butter buns, and toast cut-side down until golden.
- Assemble burgers: spread mayonnaise on buns, add lettuce, burger patty, caramelized onions, and mushrooms. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Make caramelized onions in advance to save time.
- Try garlic butter or aioli for extra flavor.
- Use different mushrooms or cheeses to change the flavor profile.
- Don’t press down on burgers while cooking to retain juiciness.
