Description

A traditional Lebanese baked dish featuring seasoned ground meat layered with tender potatoes and rich tomato sauce, creating a comforting and flavorful meal.


Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix ground meat, onion, parsley, salt, pepper, allspice, and cinnamon until well combined.
  2. Grease a baking dish with olive oil and press the meat mixture evenly into the bottom.
  3. Score the meat into portions if desired.
  4. Arrange sliced potatoes evenly on top and drizzle with olive oil.
  5. In another bowl, mix tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and water.
  6. Pour the sauce evenly over the dish.
  7. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45–60 minutes until potatoes are tender and sauce thickens.
  8. Let rest a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Add bell peppers or tomatoes for extra flavor.
  • Can substitute ground chicken for a lighter version.
