Description
A traditional Lebanese baked dish featuring seasoned ground meat layered with tender potatoes and rich tomato sauce, creating a comforting and flavorful meal.
Ingredients
- 500 g ground beef or lamb
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix ground meat, onion, parsley, salt, pepper, allspice, and cinnamon until well combined.
- Grease a baking dish with olive oil and press the meat mixture evenly into the bottom.
- Score the meat into portions if desired.
- Arrange sliced potatoes evenly on top and drizzle with olive oil.
- In another bowl, mix tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and water.
- Pour the sauce evenly over the dish.
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45–60 minutes until potatoes are tender and sauce thickens.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Add bell peppers or tomatoes for extra flavor.
- Can substitute ground chicken for a lighter version.
- Prepare ahead and bake when needed.
