Description

This fried halloumi with za’atar and honey is a quick and flavorful appetizer or snack featuring crispy golden halloumi slices coated in za’atar and cornflour, pan-fried, then finished with honey, chili flakes, and extra za’atar for a perfect balance of salty, sweet, herby, and spicy flavors.

Ingredients

  • 400 g Halloumi, sliced into 1 cm thick pieces
  • 1 tsp + ¼ tsp Za’atar (divided, plus more for topping)
  • 1 Tbsp Cornflour (cornstarch)
  • 2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 4 Tbsp + 1 Tbsp Runny Honey (divided, plus more for topping)
  • ½ tsp Chili Flakes

Instructions

  1. Slice the halloumi into 1 cm thick pieces and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine 1 tsp of za’atar with 1 Tbsp of cornflour.
  3. Heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil in a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  4. Dredge each halloumi slice in the za’atar-cornflour mix, shaking off excess.
  5. Fry slices in batches for 60–90 seconds per side until golden and crispy.
  6. Turn off the heat and drizzle 1 Tbsp of honey over the fried slices, flipping to coat.
  7. Transfer fried halloumi to a plate and keep warm; repeat with the next batch.
  8. Arrange all glazed halloumi on a serving platter.
  9. Sprinkle with chili flakes, the remaining ¼ tsp of za’atar, and an extra drizzle of honey.
  10. Serve immediately while hot and crisp.

Notes

  • Best enjoyed fresh and hot—halloumi loses crispness as it cools.
  • For extra flavor, add fresh herbs like mint or parsley when serving.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in a skillet or oven, not microwave.
  • Try variations like hot honey, lemon zest, smoked paprika, or serving with fresh fruit.
