Description
Fluffy Japanese Milk Bread rolls are soft, lightly sweet, and perfectly tender with a golden crust. Made with just a few simple ingredients, these pillowy rolls are perfect as a side dish, breakfast treat, or enjoyed on their own fresh from the oven.
Ingredients
- 260 grams bread flour
- 180 grams cold milk
- 1 teaspoon (4 grams) active dry yeast
- 30 grams granulated sugar
- 20 grams unsalted butter, melted
- Flour, for dusting tops (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour, cold milk, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir until a rough dough forms.
- Transfer dough to a clean surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth, soft, and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
- Divide dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each into a smooth ball and place on a parchment-lined baking tray.
- Let the dough balls rise for 30 minutes until puffy. Lightly dust tops with flour if desired.
- Bake in preheated oven for 18 minutes, or until lightly golden and baked through.
- Serve warm for the softest texture and best flavor.
Notes
- Use whole milk for a slightly richer result.
- For a sweet version, add chocolate chips or dried fruit before shaping.
- Brush with milk or egg wash before baking for a glossy finish.
- Shape into knots or braids for a fun presentation.
- Freeze cooled rolls for longer storage and reheat straight from freezer.
