Creamy and flavorful homemade refried beans made with simple ingredients and warm spices, perfect as a comforting side dish.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cans (400 g each) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup vegetable broth or water
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and sauté onion for 4–5 minutes until soft.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add pinto beans and stir to combine.
- Pour in vegetable broth and add cumin, chili powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
- Simmer for 8–10 minutes to blend flavors.
- Mash beans using a potato masher until desired consistency is reached.
- Stir in lime juice and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- Adjust texture by mashing more or less.
- Add cayenne or chili for extra heat.
- Use smoked paprika for deeper flavor.
- Store in fridge up to 4 days or freeze for 2 months.
- Add a splash of broth when reheating.
