Description

Creamy and flavorful homemade refried beans made with simple ingredients and warm spices, perfect as a comforting side dish.


Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (400 g each) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and sauté onion for 4–5 minutes until soft.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add pinto beans and stir to combine.
  4. Pour in vegetable broth and add cumin, chili powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Simmer for 8–10 minutes to blend flavors.
  6. Mash beans using a potato masher until desired consistency is reached.
  7. Stir in lime juice and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Adjust texture by mashing more or less.
  • Add cayenne or chili for extra heat.
  • Use smoked paprika for deeper flavor.
  • Store in fridge up to 4 days or freeze for 2 months.
