Description
A warm, comforting dessert of cinnamon‑spiced apples baked under a buttery, golden crumble topping—easy to make and always satisfying.
Ingredients
- 300 g plain flour
- Pinch of salt
- 175 g soft brown sugar
- 200 g unsalted butter, cubed, at room temperature
- 450 g apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1 cm pieces
- 50 g soft brown sugar (for filling)
- 1 tablespoon plain flour (for filling)
- Pinch ground cinnamon (for filling)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 °C (160 °C fan) or Gas Mark 4.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and 175 g brown sugar. Add butter cubes and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs (some larger clumps are fine).
- In another bowl, toss apples with 50 g brown sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and the pinch of cinnamon, mixing gently until evenly coated.
- Butter or grease a 24 cm (9‑inch) ovenproof dish. Spoon the apple mixture into the bottom and flatten it into an even layer.
- Spoon the crumble topping over the apples, covering them fully.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the top is golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. It’s wonderful with cream, custard, or vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- You can add rolled oats or chopped nuts (e.g. walnuts, pecans) into the crumble topping for extra texture.
- Try mixing in raisins or sultanas into the apple filling for sweetness and chew.
- If your apples are very sweet, reduce the sugar a bit. Using tart apples (like Granny Smith or Bramley) helps balance the sweetness.
- This dessert freezes well—freeze before or after baking in airtight containers. Defrost and reheat in the oven for best texture.
