Ingredients
- For the Salisbury steak patties:
- 1 pound ground beef (80–85% lean)
- 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- For the mushroom gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire-style sauce (halal-friendly)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and shape into 4 oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms and sauté for 4–5 minutes until browned.
- Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir for 1 minute to cook the flour.
- Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire-style sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Bring to a gentle simmer, then return patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low for 8–10 minutes until cooked through and gravy thickens.
Notes
- Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Add sliced onions to the gravy for more flavor.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons of cream at the end for a creamier sauce.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
