Description
This classic comfort food features tender dried beef in a rich, creamy sauce served over warm toast. It’s quick, hearty, and satisfying—perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an easy dinner.
Ingredients
- 8 oz dried beef, chopped and rinsed, then patted dry
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 4 slices white or sandwich bread, toasted
Instructions
- Rinse the dried beef under cool water to remove excess salt. Pat dry and chop into bite-sized pieces.
- In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a smooth roux.
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
- Add the heavy cream and continue stirring until the sauce thickens, about 3–5 minutes.
- Stir in the chopped dried beef, black pepper, and nutmeg if using.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2–3 minutes until heated through.
- Spoon the creamed beef over toasted bread and serve immediately.
Notes
- Rinsing dried beef helps reduce saltiness for a better-balanced flavor.
- Use all milk instead of cream for a lighter version.
- Add sautéed mushrooms or onions for extra flavor depth.
- This dish also works well served over mashed potatoes or biscuits.
