Ingredients

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or hot brewed coffee

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9×13-inch pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  4. Slowly pour in the hot water or coffee while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin; this is normal.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan(s).
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes for round pans or 35–40 minutes for a rectangular pan, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
