Description

Baked Apple Roses are elegant puff pastry desserts filled with thinly sliced apples arranged in a rose pattern, sweetened with cinnamon sugar, and baked until golden and crisp. These stunning pastries are simple to make yet perfect for impressing guests.

Ingredients

  • 1 large red apple (e.g., Gala, Honeycrisp, or Red Delicious)
  • 1/4 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (17.25 oz), thawed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease two 6–8 oz ramekins. Dust the insides with granulated sugar and set aside.
  2. Core and thinly slice the apple (about 1/16 inch thick). Place slices on a microwave-safe plate, overlapping if needed.
  3. Microwave apple slices for 45 seconds until slightly soft. Cover with plastic wrap and a towel to let them steam for a few minutes.
  4. Mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface until just under 1/8 inch thick. Cut into two strips (about 3 inches x 12 inches).
  6. Brush each strip with melted butter and sprinkle generously with the cinnamon sugar.
  7. Arrange apple slices along one long edge of each pastry strip, overlapping them with rounded edges sticking out slightly.
  8. Fold the bottom half of the pastry strip over the bottom of the apples, forming a flap.
  9. Beat the egg with 2 teaspoons water to make an egg wash. Brush the top of each pastry strip with it.
  10. Carefully roll each strip into a spiral rose shape and seal the edge.
  11. Place each rolled rose into a ramekin with the petals facing up. Sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar if desired.
  12. Set ramekins on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes, or until pastry is golden and puffed.
  13. Let cool for 5–10 minutes before carefully removing from ramekins. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  14. Dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • Use different fruits like pear, peach, or mango for variation.
  • Brush with apricot or raspberry jam after baking for shine.
  • Add chopped nuts before rolling for extra crunch.
  • Spread sweetened cream cheese on the pastry for richness.
  • Enhance the spice blend with nutmeg, clove, or cardamom.
  • Store at room temp for 1 day or refrigerate up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a 325°F oven for 5–7 minutes to restore crispness.
