Ingredients
- 3 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (for caramel)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 cup whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (optional for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and lightly grease an 8–9 inch baking dish or ovenproof skillet.
- In a bowl combine the sliced apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt. Toss until evenly coated.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In another bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter evenly over the apple layer and gently spread it with a spatula.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean.
- While the cake bakes, prepare the salted caramel by heating sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until melted and amber colored.
- Add the butter and stir until fully melted and combined.
- Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously and let it simmer for about 1 minute until smooth.
- Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt.
- Drizzle the warm salted caramel over the baked cake.
- Allow the cake to rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
- Scoop portions into bowls and serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
Notes
- Firm apples such as Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp work best for baking.
- The dessert is meant to be spooned rather than sliced due to its soft texture.
- If the caramel thickens after cooling, warm it gently with a small amount of cream.
- You can substitute store-bought caramel sauce and add a pinch of sea salt for convenience.
- Adding chopped nuts or raisins to the apple layer provides extra texture and flavor.
